In the Middle Ages, the Republic of Dubrovnik had a number of good shipyards and excellent shipbuilders. The oldest information about the nave exists in Dubrovnik. The Dubrovnik naves were widely known in the world for their solid construction and ability to carry large loads. The main characteristics of ships of the 15th and 16th centuries were a large round hull with a cut-off stern, three masts and a larger number of sails (usually four).
