PULAKA (POLACCA)

Pulaka is a merchant sailing ship. In terms of size and number, it was the most prominent ship in the Dubrovnik navy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Unlike most ships of this type in the Mediterranean, the Dubrovnik pulakas did not have oars and were somewhat larger. They had three masts, an aft barracks and weapons. As a rule, these ships were owned by private merchants and shipowners, but they were also part of the state merchant and war fleet of the Republic of Dubrovnik. Pulakas not only transported cargo, but also passengers, so the aft part was specially designed for this purpose.
