SANTA MARIA

Santa Maria, built in Galicia, which is why it was initially called La Gallega. Its owner was the rich Juan de la Cosa. He rented a ship to Columbus, but he also decided to take part in that expedition. So he was also one of the passengers. The largest mast was 26 meters high, and a large red cross stood on the sail. On Christmas Day 1492, the Santa Maria ran aground on a sandbar off the island of Hispaniola. Today it is shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic. The ship was so damaged that it could not be repaired. The first Spanish settlement in America was built of wood. They called it La Navidad, which means Christmas in Spanish. 30-35 sailors stayed in it
